Colchicum autumnale, commonly called autumn crocus (though not a true crocus), contains the highly toxic compound colchicine in its bulbs. Despite its narrow therapeutic window, colchicine is an effective treatment for gout, particularly when anti-inflammatory medications are not tolerated.
