Hidden Promise Limited Edition Prints

Catharanthus roseus, more commonly known as Madagascar periwinkle, was the source of the discovery of one of the most important groups of cancer treatments, the vinca alkaloids. In 1958, a team of researchers in Canada noted a dramatic reduction in white blood cell counts and bone marrow activity in lab rats, and Charles Beer isolated the active constituent, now known as vinblastine and later vincristine, in 1963.

These chemicals likely evolved in the plant to deter herbivores as they have a very bitter taste. Vincristine has transformed the treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) from a fatal disease to a survival rate higher than 90%. Vinblastine has greater bone-marrow suppressive effects and is used as part of regimens for treating lymphoma, but also testicular cancer, breast cancer, germ-cell cancers and Kaposi’s sarcoma.

Variants of this plant have white flowers, and Hidden Promise, shows Reed-Sternberg cells, which are the diagnostic hallmark of Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
