The Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia) has long been recognised as a poisonous tree, with its toxins evolving as a defence against predators. Yet within this deadly chemistry was discovered paclitaxel — one of the most important chemotherapy medicines used today. Collected for cancer research in the 1960s, compounds from the yew tree were found to have powerful anti-cancer properties.

After overcoming challenges of extraction and production, scientists developed a semi-synthetic form of paclitaxel using related yew species, allowing this remarkable medicine to be produced sustainably. Used in the treatment of breast and ovarian cancers, paclitaxel reveals the hidden strength within nature — a reminder that even the most unlikely sources can hold life-saving discoveries.
