Mater Medica Limited Edition Prints
Mater Medica Limited Edition Prints
Materia medica is Latin for medical material and is used to describe reference books that catalogue medicinal plants, particularly in relation to pharmacology and botany. Mater is Latin for Mother, so this title plays on these two phrases, as herein lies a reference to multiple plants used to help women manage hormonal symptoms or reproductive health.
For the first time, I have included herbal remedies as well as using the plants themselves to represent the female reproductive organs. I have primarily included herbal remedies, as there are so many still used by women across the world, despite varying evidence on their effectiveness.
Both soybean and Chinese yams are the source of the active ingredient in hormonal contraceptives and HRT. The active naturally occurring ingredient is diosgenin, which is industrially extracted from these sources and then highly processed to produce synthetic hormones that can survive digestion.
